About This Course

Register here, then select the cycle you want your child to attend. The cycle should be selected from the Public Education page.

Kids will learn while having fun performing blood types, identifying bacteria, using medical laboratory equipment, designing their version of an animal or a plant cell, playing Mr. Nose Sneezes and enjoy other games and activities.

Each day will be a different theme and your young medical scientists will be required to wear a different color for each day. Each day will involve an interactive game, a short video (at most 15 minutes), reading, and performing a lab procedure. A different laboratory equipment will be used each day. Each week will end with a 1 hour show whereby students will perform or display something they did during the week. Parents or guardians will be invited to attend. During this show we’ll present your medical scientists with a small token.

Learning Objectives

Differentiate between plant and animal cells.

Stain cells.

Perform an ABO/Rh blood type similar to what is done on hospital patients.

Learn to accurately use a microscope and other laboratory equipment.

Requirements

Food and drink for the day. There will be two 15 minute breaks one at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Lunch will be at 12 p.m. for 30-45 minutes.
Wear a different color each day to match the day's theme.

Target Audience

10-13 year old juniors who love science or doing experiments.
Post SEA students, form one students.
This could be a break from the routine lessons for students preparing for SEA.
Juniors who are inquisitive about animals or plants.
Juniors who may have been exposed to and enjoy watching medical or CSI shows.
Juniors who prefer to work with their hands and figure things out.

Marion is a medical laboratory scientist certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology. She also has a Masters degree in Clinical Laboratory Management and completed a specialist in blood banking certificate program. She has many years experience in the blood transfusion service in the U.S and in Trinidad and Tobago. In addition to the work done at Trinity she is an adjunct immunohaematology lecturer and provides non technical and technical advice to persons in need of blood, medical laboratory technologists respectively.
