Direct antiglobulin test. Why? How and when?
About This Course
The direct antiglobulin test (DAT), also known as the direct Coombs, is a routine
test performed in blood banks and in the transfusion service. The test result can tell us whether
or not red blood cells are sensitized in-vivo. However, the clinical significance of the DAT
depends on the patient’s medical history and why the test was requested. This continuing
education will discuss the principle of the test, factors that influence the result and the
significance of the result.
